Lectures

There has never been a time in history when human life has been more convenient. We travel further with less effort, know more with a few keystrokes, and have comforts that earlier generations could scarcely imagine. Yet beneath these advances, many of us continue to carry the same questions. Why do we keep repeating the same patterns in our relationships? Why do moments we once believed would finally satisfy us often leave us searching again? Why does the mind continue to chase, compare and long for something just beyond reach? What is it that we are truly looking for?

'Spakoina Lectures' are a place to stay with these questions a little longer. Drawing from Mahayana Buddhism, psychotherapy and contemplative practice, they explore the patterns that shape our inner and outer lives like our relationships, our suffering, the stories we inherit, the ways we interfere with ourselves, and the possibility of meeting life with greater clarity, compassion and responsibility. Some gatherings may be devoted to meditation, some to human interaction, some to psychological inquiry and others to the simple practice of being together in thoughtful conversation. More than a series of talks, these lectures are an attempt to cultivate a commune. A place where people can gather without needing to have arrived at certainty. A place to pause before making the next decision, to reconsider old assumptions, to practise, to listen, and to discover that many of the questions we carry are deeply human rather than uniquely our own. Whoever you are, and wherever you find yourself in life, these conversations are open to you. All that is required is a willingness to be curious. Spakoina itself comes together once each year as a retreat in the mountains. These lectures allow that conversation to remain alive throughout the year, offering a place where familiar faces and those joining for the first time can sit beside one another, explore together and gradually shape the commune that Spakoina hopes to nurture. Each gathering is offered as a fundraiser lecture, with proceeds supporting the work of Umang Foundation Trust in education and mental health, extending the same spirit of care beyond the conversation itself.
